The George Schmidt Centre, a 30-unit development in Abbotsford for men who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, is the first mid-rise multi-family home project in Western Canada to achieve gold certification in the LEED Midrise rating system. Sixty-five LEED points are required for gold-level certification; the project achieved 75.5 points. The project also achieved credit for enhanced air tightness, which is difficult to do considering the smaller size of the units. The site’s landscaping was also notable with mostly drought-tolerant plantings and only four percent designed turf.
